Common Issues That Can Arise With Desks That May Need Fixing

When I was making this manual for you, I had great difficulty choosing how to start the guide.

Should I start with the ways on how do you fix a broken desk, an unstable desk, a wobbly desk, or what other?

Then, I thought you must be having problems identifying the issues properly. So, I decided to start with them. These are;

Common Issues That Can Arise With Desks That May Need Fixing

Surface Damage

It means all the problems occurring on your desk surface. Could you please take a good look at the flat surface? What do you see?

If there are scratches, cracks, splits, or chips on your fold down desk or 1 drop-front desk, it is what we call surface damage.

These damages can happen because of regular use for a long time. If it happens to a new desk, the reason might be improper desk assembly.

What do you think about the appearance of your table? Yeah. As you can tell, it is affecting the appearance of your favorite desk.

Wobbly Desk

Let’s do a quick test. Give your desk a gentle shake. Does your desk wobbles side to side?

I knew it! It is called a wobbly desk. It can happen due to many reasons, such as uneven desk legs, unstable desk frames, uneven floors, etc.

If you are wondering why you can’t use your desk with ease like before, you just saw how it is making your desk unstable.

Loose Hardware

I don’t know what kind of desk you have. So, I can’t really tell if you have this problem or not.

If it is one of the wide-base standing desks with two-legged desk designs, do you face problems managing the desk?

It is because the fasteners, such as screws, bolts, brackets, or hardware used in the desk are loosened.

If it continues like this, it can cause additional desk damage, like a wobbly standing desk.

Stuck Drawers

Do you find it difficult to move your drawer? Does it feel jammed? It is because they are stuck.

It mostly happens because of misaligned drawers and drawer sliders. The misalignment makes the drawers difficult to open or close.

You are right. It messes with the functionality of the drawers and also the entire desk.

Damaged Desk Legs

The surface damages are easy to find out. However, most people don’t realize there’s something with the desk legs until they are severe.

Worn-out or damaged desk legs greatly affect the functionality of the desk. Desk legs are the base of the desks. So, if they get too damaged, it ruins the stability of the desks.

Fading Finish

Take a good look at your desk again. Is there anything else other than the surface damage?

If there is fading, peeling, discoloration, or wear on your desk, the finish of your desk is damaged. You might need to refinish or touch up.

If you face any of these issues with your personal or office desk, it means your desk immediately needs to be fixed.

Tools Needed To Fix A Desk

I know you are eagerly waiting for the part where I will tell you how do you fix an unstable desk.

I am sorry to keep you waiting but trust me it is important. I am talking about the tools you will need for the actual process. These are;

  • Wood Cleaner/ Mineral Spirits
  • Soft Cloth
  • Head Screwdriver
  • Dowel
  • Wood Screws
  • Wood Filler
  • Putty Knife
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood Shims/ Furniture Pads

From my experience working with other clients, I suggest you go to your nearest hardware store with this list and buy all the tools that I mentioned.

Trust me, it will give you a head start on your repairing journey. You will be saved from rushing to the store to buy things in the middle of the work that, unfortunately, a lot of my clients do. You need to collect these tools while fixing an IKEA desk as well.

How To Fix A Desk?

Wait! We have already talked about the common issues and the necessary tools. That means now we can talk about the fixing methods. Yay!

I don’t want to take any of your precious time just by talking. Let’s explore all the methods one by one;

How To Fix A Desk

Clean The Desk

Do you know what can give you a head start after buying the necessary tools? Cleaning your desk before starting to fix it.

Yes! You heard it right. It might seem like a waste of time. You may wonder why cleaning it when it is gonna be dirty during the process.

It is because it will help you with the following steps.

To clean the desk, you can use a mild wood cleaner or alcohol solvents like mineral spirits. Whatever you use, make sure to use a soft cloth instead of a harsh sponge.

Identify The Problems

After the desk is completely clean and dry, take a look at your desk like you did before. But this time look for all the possible problems you can find with your desk.

Try to identify the problems as I told you at the very beginning. Now, let’s solve them;

For Loose Screws

If you ask me how do you reinforce a desk, it is by tightening the loose fasteners. Take a head screwdriver and tighten all the loose screws.

Don’t forget to tighten the door hinges or other hardware.

If any of the screw holes seem damaged, you must make a strong base for the fasteners to sit properly. To do that-

  • You can fill it with a wood filler,
  • Or wood screws like dowels.

However, do you know how to fix a desk chair that keeps lowering? Let me tell you a hack, you need to tighten the tension control knob under the seat or replace the gas cylinder. You are all done!

For Surface Issues

If your concern is how to fix hole in desk;

  • Use a putty knife to apply wood filler to the hole.
  • To fix a dent in a desk, you must fill it completely and make sure that the surface is level.
  • After the wood filler has completely dried, use sandpaper to smooth the repaired area. It will blend the repair with the rest of the desk surface.
  • Apply a wood stain or paint to match the color of the desk. And this is how a desk increases its beauty.

If you want to know how to fix hole in laminate table, it is simple. To fix a laminate desk top, fill the hole with a wood filler that matches the color of the laminate. The rest of the process is the same as fixing a hole in a wooden desk.

If you have an IKEA desk and want to know how to fix hole in ikea desk, you don’t need to worry. As long as it is a wooden desk, the fixing method is the same.

The fun fact is that you can fix any type of hollow space, whether it is a hole, dent, crack, or split, the process is the same for all of them including, even for antique furniture.

For Wobbling

Now, let’s talk about the most serious issue of all which is how to stop a desk from wobbling side to side. To do that;

Identify The Uneven Leg

Find out which leg or legs are causing the desk to wobble side to side. You can try the paper sliding method for that.

Try sliding a piece of paper under all the legs of the table. If the paper passes easily under any of the table legs, that means the problem lies in that leg.

Level the Desk

Use a level to determine which leg is uneven. Try placing the level on the desk surface in different directions. Wherever you feel any misalignment is where the problem lies.

Add Shims

After you have identified the uneven leg, place the shim under that leg to make it even with the rest of the desk legs.

If you can’t seem to find shims, you can use furniture pads instead. It will provide stability to the desk.

Add some extra shims while fixing a roll-top desk as it is extra heavy.

If your desk has adjustable legs, use a timotion standing desk control box to control and adjust the legs.

Test And Adjust

After you are done placing the shims or furniture pads, try to rock the desk side to side by gently pushing it.

If the desk still wobbles, adjust the shims until the desk is completely stable.

What if your desk is placed on a carpet? How to fix wobbly desk on carpet?

To be honest It doesn’t matter whether the desk is on a carpet or just the floor. You can follow this exact process to get rid of the wobbliness.

However, let me help you with something extra if you are wondering how to fix a desk lamp switch. The solution is really easy, you just need to replace the switch.

For Drawer Issues

If you want to fix drawers not sliding smoothly or fix a desk drawer that keeps sliding out, you can follow these steps;

  • Carefully remove the drawer from the desk.
  • Clean the drawer slides or tracks to remove any dust, debris, or built-up that might be causing the stuck drawer.
  • Apply a lubricant to the drawer sliders or tracks.
  • Slide the drawer back into place and test its movement.
  • If the drawer still doesn’t slide smoothly, check for any misalignment or damage to the sliders.
  • You can use wood glue on any broken or loose parts of the drawers as glue cures these issues.
  • If the sliders are too damaged, replace them.

I have included all the methods and their details so that you don’t face any issues while fixing them. You can restore a tanker desk with these methods too.

Actually, people often ask me how to fix a desk bell. I would suggest you change the bell switch buddy!

If you still face any problems during the fixing, ask your questions in the online woodworking forums and communities.
